Hiking around Lofoten

YR – Norwegian weather forecast – install the app and use it. If it says wind 35m/s (126km/h, 78mph) for the next 4 days, don’t go hiking, no helicopter will save you.

To do:

  • Charge your phone before the trip. Make sure your operator uses Telenor network. Telia has poor coverage around here.
  • Always carry a little water, air is dry and sun is strong.
  • Have 50+ sunscreen and a hat, Northern Norway has much thinner ozone layer, and sun can hit harder than you expect.
  • Always have a good shell jacket, preferably also shell pants. It can rain any time – horizontally.
  • Wear many layers to adjust to the weather as needed. Merino wool is the best.
  • Wear proper footwear, not flipflops.

Don’t:

  • Please, don’t leave your used toilet paper behind! Always carry a small plastic bag for this reason. People hiking after you will thank you. Bury your products or take them with you.
  • Never throw rocks. They can move larger and larger rocks. People died because of this!
  • When walking through a village, don’t stare into house’s windows. And definitely don’t take photos of people’s houses.
